Instructions for Effective Use of These Exercises
Each module of Developing Language Proficiency - LISTENING consists of 10 aural texts, organized by levels of difficulty. Unlike DLP-Reading, the modules have no uniting themes; rather, they consists of random television news broadcasts.
- This is why it is highly recommended that you complete the first four modules of DLP-Reading before you begin DLP-Listening.
- They will help you learn the basic vocabulary and grammar, as well as introduce you to the important topics of Russian news broadcasts.
That said, DLP-Listening contains a lot of detailed and important information that will make you a better linguist! Don't fly through the texts. Read all the notes and follow the instructions carefully. The exercises are "user friendly," and you will be guided through
them each step of the way.
The format for DLP-Listening is follows:
A TOPIC SENTENCE, something like a "headline" for the report, will be presented in English in the upper left quadrate.
Below, in the lower left quadrate, you will see a VOCABULARY PREVIEW, a list of words that will help you comprehend the text. (The same format was used in DLP-Reading.)
You will be asked to read the TOPIC SENTENCE and VOCABULARY PREVIEW and listen to the text. Then click on the CONTINUE button.
In the screen that follows, the VOCABULARY PREVIEW will be replaced by an Interactive Multiple Choice Question. You may relisten to the text before you answer the question. Click on the CONTINUE button.
If the response is correct, you are given credit in the CUMULATIVE SCORE
box. This score is not recorded anywhere. It's there just to give you a
sense of how you're doing.
Although you are given credit in the CUMULATIVE SCORE box only for your
first response, you do get two chances to answer correctly.
Click on the CONTINUE button. The Russian text will now appear in the upper left quadrate.
You will see the
key response phrase(s)
highlighted in the Russian text and in the question.
Also in the upper right quadrate you will see some IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPTION POINTS. Read these notes and relisten to the text. If you are a TRANSCRIBER, spend a lot of time here:
These are the KEYS to the art of transcription!
Click on the CONTINUE button again, and the IMPORTANT TRANSCRIPTION POINTS are replaced by an ENGLISH TRANSLATION. Also, ANNOTATIONS to the Russian text will appear in the lower left quadrate. Read the TRANSLATION and ANNOTATIONS carefully and relisten to the text.
The material on THIS SCREEN is what YOU NEED TO
KNOW to improve your overall language COMPREHENSION! Spend a few minutes STUDYING
this screen!

Click on the NEXT QUESTION button and continue with the module.
Students should continue WORKING FORWARD
through the modules that follow. It is also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that students
regularly "revisit" all completed modules. As the saying goes:
<<ποχτοςεξιε -- νατψ υώεξιρ!>>
("Repetition is the mother of learning!")
