Instructions for Effective Use of These Exercises

Each topic of Developing Language Proficiency - READING has an introductory essay in English that provides an overview of the theme to be studied. The exercises are "user friendly," and you will be guided through them each stage of the way. Here's how it all works:

BULLET ITEM Russian text and a related question, posed in English, will be presented.
BULLET ITEM Read the text and then answer the question.
BULLET ITEM If the response is correct, you are given credit in the CUMULATIVE SCORE box. This score is not recorded anywhere. It's there just to give you a sense of how you're doing. Although you are given credit in the CUMULATIVE SCORE box only for your first response, you do get two chances to answer correctly.
BULLET ITEM Click on the CONTINUE button. You will see the key response phrase(s) highlighted in the question, the Russian text and in the parallel English translation which will now appear on your screen. You might also want to briefly compare the Russian and English texts.
BULLET ITEM Click on the CONTINUE button again, and important topic-specific vocabulary will be highlighted in the parallel Russian/English texts.
BULLET ITEM Portions of the Russian text may be footnoted. These footnotes indicate important and interesting points of grammar, lexicon, translation, etc. and are expanded in the ANNOTATIONS section. The material on THIS SCREEN is what YOU NEED TO KNOW to improve your READING COMPREHENSION! Spend a few minutes STUDYING this screen!
BULLET ITEM Click on the NEXT QUESTION button and continue with the module.
BULLET ITEM At the conclusion of each module, you will be given a list of the important vocabulary words that you encountered along the way. PRINT A HARD-COPY of this list for further study and to use as a working aid.

Students should continue WORKING FORWARD through the modules that follow. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that students regularly "revisit" all completed modules. As the saying goes:

<<ποχτοςεξιε -- νατψ υώεξιρ!>>
("Repetition is the mother of learning!")
